Creation Kills Creator
Nathan gives life to Ava, yet she takes his life. This is ironic and unexpected because those who bring life into the world never expect to have their life taken from them by their own creation.
Robots, Humans, and Humanity
It appears Nathan is a step ahead though, because he informs Caleb he overheard his conversation with Ava and then he reveals that Caleb is actually the one being tested and not Ava. He goes onto explain that he researched Caleb's internet profile and searches and chose him as the test subject because he fit the profile he was looking for. Yes, Ava learns to use seduction as manipulation, and the audience might learn how screwed up that is because it's more blatant when even a robot can pull it off, but Ex Machina doesn't go any. Ava is the deuteragonist and anti-heroine of the 2015 sci-fi movie Ex Machina. She is an artificial intelligence created by Nathan Bateman, founder of search engine Bluebook, who invites Caleb Smith to his home to see how he and Ava would interact. She is portrayed by Swedish actress Alicia Vikander. When first introduced to Caleb, Ava has an clearly artificial. Ava asks if Nathan will ever let her out, and Nathan responds he will. Ava doesn't believe Nathan and tackles him, but Nathan proves too strong for his own creation to overpower and destroys her arm, dragging her by her legs. Kyoko then stabs Nathan in the back with the knife, prompting Nathan to destroy Kyoko. This leads to Ava pulling the knife out of Nathan's back so she can stab him to death, leaving Nathan goggling in disbelief as he wonders just how sen. She did this not only to Caleb, but to Nathan and even Kyoko (whatever she whispered in her ear) to convince her to stab Nathan. Ava succeeded in exhibiting human behavior, especially that of planning and executing a deceptive plan. Whether she 'felt' them is another matter; one I don't think is relevant to the Turing test.
In many ways, Ava (a robot) is more wholly human than her creator. She possesses a wider range of deep, profound human emotion; her creator is a narcissistic egomaniac with a penchant for violence and a distinct lack of emotional range.
Ava's Sexuality
Ava, who is apparently indistinguishable from a human (in terms of emotions, physical appearance, etc.), is not truly sexual -- a key aspect of being human.
Caleb
Caleb, a seemingly average but reasonably intelligent man, is tasked with testing Ava. However, Nathan, who has created a new species and is a genius (but has a god complex) is likely just as, if not more, capable of testing his creation.
Ava: Machine or Monster?
Nathan, who is portrayed as a egotistical genius, creates a robot that is nearly identical to humans, yet underestimates his creation's capacity for the destructive acts that humans are capable of.
Ex machina: Ava's Analysis
First action: Ava is trying to establish relationship with Caleb. She is interacting with him and starts to ask him some questions. She asks questions about his family, his job and many more. The reason why she is trying to create a relationship with Caleb is because she wants to change Caleb's perception of herself. She is trying to interact with Caleb in the same way than two human beings would interact together. In this way, Caleb's attitude could change and he would be willing to help her.
Ex Machina Ava Kills Nathan Lane
Consequence: Caleb is surprised how human Ava is. His attitude changes and looks very interested in Ava, he is fascinated and starts having a good relation with the AI.
Second action: Ava creates power cuts during a session. Then, she tells Caleb that Nathan is dangerous and constantly lies. She is actually trying to speak directly to Caleb so she could gain his trust. This way, she can count on someone outside her prison cell to help her escape.
Consequence: Caleb is manipulated by Ava. He believes everything she tells him and starts having suspicions about Nathan. Ava now has an ally in who she can trust.
Third action: Ava tells Caleb that Nathan is going to eliminate her and is going to erase her mind. Actually, Nathan confirms to Caleb that he really is going to make a newer version of AI and that he will have to get rid of Ava. When she tells Caleb, who is willing to do everything for her, that her end might be near, she is actually trying push Caleb to make an escape plan for both of them.
Ex Machina Meaning
Consequence: Caleb creates an escape plan. He doesn't want Ava to be destroyed so, he gets Nathan drunk and reprogram the system so that they could escape the next day. Caleb is now trying to do everything to escape with Ava and even becomes a bit crazy. He doesn't trust Nathan anymore.
Fourth action: Ava finds her way out of her prison cell with the help of Caleb. Then, with the help of Kyoko, which is also an AI, she kills Nathan. Then, she takes his card and makes sure that Caleb is locked inside the house. Now, she is able to escape the house and to integrate human society.
Consequence: Ava reveales that she had no good intentions and that her only plan was to escape and to go in the open world. Nathan is dead and Caleb is locked inside, with no escape possibility wich means he might die as well.
Fifth action: Ava escapes from the house with Nathan's card. Then, she takes the helicopter who was supposed to pick up Caleb, and joins the open world. In the end, Ava is very human like and is standing in a very crowded city. She successfully achieved her goal wich was to get away.
Consequence: We don't know the consequences of this action but, we can suppose, because Ava has killed Nathan and Caleb, that her intentions might not be very good for human beings. In fact, earlier in the movie, Nathan said that AI will look at human beings like if we were a retarded civilisation. Caleb also said: «I have become destroyer of worlds» wich could reveal that AI might actually be evil against humanity.
